Abstract:

This review paper presents an inclusive analysis of the methodologies and conditions related to waste management system analysis, focused on landfill siting. Over 200 scientific journal papers were published since 2003, and 100 of the most prominent among them were reviewed. The study employs various statistical analyses to synthesize information and outcomes as methodology. This paper examines key parameters, including study area locations, publication periods, citation metrics, publishers, journal impact factors, and the qualitative and quantitative rankings of the articles. The investigations reveal that Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and Remote Sensing (RS), either independently or in combination with other techniques, are widely used in landfill siting. Additionally, Multicriteria Decision Support Systems (MCDS) and the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) are the most commonly applied methodologies for ranking suitable landfill site. A detailed assessment of landfill site selection criteria highlights that environmental factors are the most significant, followed by social, climatological, geological, and hydrogeological patterns. The results and categories presented valuable understandings and direction for future researchers, supporting more accurate and sustainable decisions in the complex and multifaceted process of landfill site selection worldwide.
